These days I remembered why I don’t have a TV (and watch my favorite shows either online or on DVD). The reason is called ‘the news’. From any point you look at it, you would want that, by watching the news, to learn something useful or something that would/could impact you in some way. But the so-called journalists make sure to give you anything but that. In fact they give you the exact opposite and in the long term they dumb you down.
Let me give you a two examples:
The Tiger Woods “media scandal”. Why exactly should I care what Tiger Woods does in his spare time? I personally don’t give a [insert nice word here]. The man is a legend. He has brought huge attention to a very boring sport. Let’s leave it to that. And generally speaking, when the media is talking about someone, it should be talking about the things that that someone excels at. We are all flawed by design. Quit making such a big deal out of it. This is not news!
Second example is the one of Knox ‘case’. Some chick who went to Italy to study and instead killed some other chick with the help of her Italian boyfriend. So what? Where exactly is the news people? Who is exactly is this ‘media coverage’ helping? What exactly I am supposed to learn from this? That people named Knox are bad? That visiting Italy is bad? How is a killer that comes from the US is different from another killer? Again. Dumbing you down. Because you have a right to know, NOT. This is not news!
The real purpose of the media, as I see it, is to help you stay informed, not to channel attention to subjects that can and will make you dumber. Anything that will remotely make you think: “This is not news” is probably not worth you attention.
